| I made mention of the re-release of this amp on another thread, but I figured it deserved its own. Guys like Becker, Vai and Chaquico made this amp famous - it is the quintessential shredders amp - using most of the cascaded gain circuitry present in their Quad X preamps - a 5 band slider EQ and up to a 1/4 power cut - this amp made its rounds in the 80s - including being the mainstay sound of Frank Zappa.
When I mentioned this yesterday - I didn't know exactly which flavor of the 'X' series amps was to be released - turns out it is in fact the X100B. Purportedly in both head and combo units. The backroom rumor is that the EQ will be expanded to 7 bands and it will support both the 6L6 and EL34 configs as it used to back in the day. There is likely to be some extra switching thrown in as well.
By far, this is the most popular shredder amp ever made by Carvin - good to see it coming back. The guys are scrambling to get one ready for the January NAMM show, and will be taking pre-orders there, expected production ship date is beginning of the 2nd quarter of '08.

Location: Virginia | I actually own the Original Carvin X 60 B amp head[I bought it used for [$250.00]...I used it from 1988-2003 till the transformer went up 4 years ago..All tube and it kicked ass!Looking to getting it fixed sometime this year...Right now I use a Randall RH 100 head...

I had a friend who got one of these given to him by a guy who found one in his basement (not a guitar player), had no use for it, and gave it to him for NOTHING. He got new tubes put in and a little bit of repair work and cleaning work done and it plays like a charm, I'm jealous :'( |
